Fall Styling Ideas - by Nick Arrojo

Fashion is always in motion. Trends change, subtly, every season. It’s time and chance to reinvent the way you look and feel. It doesn’t mean color and cut need to be redone; you can follow Fall’s fashions by mimicking styling ideas created for the runways. And this season’s trendiest styles -- natural-looking, textured tresses, sleek, polished blow-dries, pumped-up body -- should be easy for any girl to do. All it requires is the right approach to styling, and correct product choice and application. Here’s my top-tips for fashion-forward shapes and styles this fall ...

Rock & Roll Waves
If there is one dominating current trend, it’s head-turning tousle and flow. Loose, curvaceous, full-bodied waves that play into natural texture are the rage, and it’s something that is easy to do: Blow-dry the hair loosely, without a brush, until it is around 80% dry. Now apply styling creme –– so you have moisture and support and hold –– from roots to ends. Once the product is in, cup and scrunch, cup and scrunch, cup and crunch –– work it, work it, work it –– until your waves are a bouncy, voluptuous, cascading surge of style. (If your hair lacks that natural wave that can be enhanced with product, and cupping and scrunching, mix in a little curl creme with the styling creme and loosely wrap sections of hair around a curling iron, until you get the texture you crave.) Finish with a light mist of holding spray to help set the look into place, or a few drops of shine spray for an extra dose of bedazzle.

Fullness Is Fabulous
On the runway, in the salon, on the street, volume is big. It’s a classic look in serious vogue, so let’s create this style du jour: The right styling product is key –– volume foam. Foam is lighter and more airy than the other bodybuilders (mousse, gel, spray), which makes it easier to apply where volume is created: at the roots. So, on damp hair apply volume foam at the roots, working through to the mid-lengths. Now use a mid-sized round brush and a blow-dryer. Brush your roots up, up and away from the scalp and follow this path with the heat of the blow-dryer; this creates fullness, fast. To hold that extra body and lift all-day, finish with a light mist of holding spray, or carry the mini holding spray in your purse for on-the-go up-keep.

Slicked-Back Style
Slicking the hair back is another Fall hot look. Adding drama, boldness, stylized glamor, it puts the attention where it should be –– on the beautiful features of the face. It’s easy: Apply hair gel from roots to ends and then push all of your hair backwards –– sweep it back, back, back, creating hold and control, and a modern, slicked-back style.

Smooth, Straight Blow-Dry
One style that will never go out of fashion is the smooth, sleek, polished blow-dry. For a runway-ready look, the trick is a product cocktail that I use all the time on clients: Place a small amount of defrizz serum into palms, rub together, and apply to damp hair, focusing the application from the mid-lengths to the ends. Next, spritz set & style spray into hair, again working from mid-lengths to ends. Now blow-dry on a high heat for velvety smooth shape and style. A product cocktail sure to create lustrous, best-ever blow-dries.

Fall Hair Colors
Though it’s not essential to change your hair color every season, or according to every trend, a new hue can give you back that vivacious glow. If you want to complement these styling ideas with a fabulous contemporary color, here’s my top picks for the season: Rich browns, dark and striking blondes, and warm shades of auburn and copper. Stay clear of colors that are too brassy or too fake. Solid looks are better this Fall, so if highlights are your thing, opt for finely sliced, natural tonal streaks, rather than the chunkier, heavier variety. And if you’re in a hair color regimen, you can save time and money and trips to the salon by choosing the right products. Lock in vibrancy, preserve shine, and help color last longer with ARROJO color save shampoo and conditioner.
